.... working with women and children to challenge domestic abuse

03/06/2009 - 2008/2009 Statistics

Women's Aid Monmouthshire continues to provide a high level of support throughout the county and figures for 1 April 2008 - 31 March 2009 show an ongoing need for domestic abuse services.

During 2008/2009 there were 1365 direct contacts made to Women's Aid Monmouthshire (this is lower than previous years as there was funding for fewer staff hours during 2008-2009).

Of these 1365 contacts:

* 1180 contacts were made during office hours (10-5 Monday-Friday).

* 185 contacts were made to the after hours on-call service - this is lower than in previous years as, during very busy periods, calls have sometimes been diverted to the Wales Domestic Abuse Helpline (0808 80 10 800).

* 1104 contacts were made via telephone/e-mail.

* 261 contacts were made in person (office or outreach). This is lower than in previous years as, for the entire period, we have been unable to offer a drop-in service at our offices - funding is currently being sought to resume this service.

* 335 new referrals were taken in respect of women.

* 358 new referrals were taken in respect of the children of the above women.

* 1092 contacts were regarding Monmouthshire women.

* 58 contacts were regarding Blaenau Gwent women. (We can source refuge for these women but any iother services requested are referred to Blaenau Gwent Domestic Abuse Services).

* 215 contacts were regarding women living elsewhere.

* 189 requests were received for refuge places.

* 557 requests were received for outreach support/freedom programme.

* 79 requests were received for aftercare (women leaving refuge).

* 841 requests were received for information.

*918 contacts were made directly by women.

* 93 contacts were made by other domestic abuse agencies.

* 99 contacts were made by social services.

* 37 contacts were made by the police.

* 63 contacts were made by housing agencies.

* 46 contacts were made by healthcare workers.
