Volunteering
As a charitable organisation we rely on the vital contribution of volunteers
to carry out some of our work. Volunteers are required to undergo a
Police Check and complete a probationary period, and once these are
completed you can become fully involved with the work that we do. You
might help with activities or outings with children, accompany women
to legal or medical appointments, get involved with administrative
tasks in the office, form supportive relationships with women who require
refuge aftercare, or help with fundraising.
As a volunteer we will find out what contribution you wish to make
to ensure that you gain as much enjoyment and satisfaction as possible,
we provide training and an induction to ensure that you feel supported
and confident in your role within the team, and we will cover all expenses
that you might incur whilst working with us so that you are never out
of pocket.
Become a Management Committee Member
Our
Management Committee consists of workers, volunteers, directors and
trustees. Women’s Aid Monmouthshire is always seeking new
members for our Management Committee. You will need to be available
to attend evening Management Committee meetings once every six weeks.
It is useful if you have expertise in operational areas such as finance
and fundraising, or human resources and employment law.
As with other volunteers we will cover all expenses.
Make a Donation
Women’s Aid Monmouthshire gratefully accepts cash donations (please
makes cheques payable to Women’s Aid Monmouthshire). We also
sometimes accept donations of good quality toys and clothes. Please
check with us first as if we already have a full supply of clothes
and toys, and we can direct you to other excellent charities that might
benefit more from your donation. Any donations of furniture should
be directed to ‘Homemakers’, the furniture recycling project
based in Abergavenny – call them on 01873 857618
Raising Awareness
One of our biggest challenges is
getting people to talk about domestic abuse and changing people’s
perceptions of domestic abuse and violence against women. It is not
a private
matter, it is not an
individual problem, and under no circumstances is it acceptable.
Domestic abuse affects us all and must be challenged by all. You
can help by:
- Telling women and children about Women's Aid Monmouthshire.
We can not help unless people know we are here.
- Ask
for our leaflets and posters for yourself, your friends or
your workplace and display them prominently.
- Ask
us to provide our Domestic Abuse Basic Awareness training in your
workplace – you
may be surprised by some of the things you will learn
- Make a donation,
hold a fundraising event, or offer a few hours a week to volunteer
with us. Without funds and the generous support
of
volunteers we can not provide our services.
- Challenge
other people’s
perceptions, as well as your own. Perpetrators of abuse against
women are less likely to be condemned
by their colleagues, friends and family than perpetrators of abuse
against animals or children. Verbal or physical abuse against minority
groups is taken seriously, but abuse against women in the home
is often ignored. Why do people hold these beliefs? Is it right?
