Cover
your tracks
You may not want anyone to know you
have been looking at this website. Take a few minutes to read this
information and
take steps to increase your safety when using the email and the Internet.
Please be aware, however, this information may not completely cover
your tracks. The safest way to use the Internet is at a local library,
a friend's house, or at work.
E-mail: Your
abuser may have guessed your password to your email account and they
may be able to read
your incoming and outgoing mail. If you
believe your account is secure, make sure you choose a password that
an abuser will not be able to guess and change it regularly.
History
/ cache file: If
an abuser knows how to view the history or cache file (automatically
saved web pages and graphics) on your
computer
then they may be able to see information you have viewed recently
on the internet. To delete your history and cache file, follow
the steps
below.
Internet
Explorer: Select
the Tools menu at the top of the screen and then select Internet
Options. Under Temporary Internet
Files,
click
on Delete Files. Under History click on Clear
History.
Netscape: Select
the Edit menu at the top of the screen and then select Preferences.
Click on Navigator and choose Clear History. Click on
Advanced then select Cache. Click on Clear
Disk Cache.
AOL: Select the Members menu and then select Preferences. Click on the
WWW icon. Then select Advanced and Purge
Cache.
Leaving
If
you are planning to leave your abuser then there are steps you can
take that might help you to make your escape quickly and safely.
 |
You
may have to leave on the spur of the moment. Plan an escape and
get the support of a trusted neighbour or friend if possible. |
 |
Take
your children with you. You may not be able to collect them later
without going through the courts. |
 |
Keep
some money saved for taxis or bus fares, and telephone calls. |
 |
Try
to ensure you have your own key to the house. |
 |
Have
clothes ready for you and your children in case of a quick getaway. |
 |
Get
the telephone numbers of your nearest Women's Aid Group. |
 |
Make
sure you have important documents, your child benefit book, marriage
and birth certificates, passports and medication with you when
you leave. |
